Detroit Steel is one of those deep-cut Iron Man villains LEGO® almost never touches, and somehow a 2017 set is the best version of him we've got. The build is average but that minifig alone is doing real work.

Detroit Steel isn't exactly a household name, which makes this set a weird artifact — LEGO® went obscure with their villain pick and the result is something only Marvel fans will fully appreciate. The mech build is functional but not inspired; it's the kind of construction you finish in an afternoon without any real surprises. Three minifigs for $29.99 is a fair enough deal on paper, and Iron Man plus Detroit Steel together give it some display credibility. The problem is the set just doesn't have strong shelf presence — it's mid-sized, mid-complexity, and sits in that awkward middle ground where it's too small to impress and too niche to be a must-have. As a snapshot of a moment when LEGO® was willing to dig into B-tier Marvel, it's interesting. As a set to seek out today, it's a C+ across the board for a reason.
