Explorer Train lands in that City sweet spot where the set is fun to build, decent to display, and genuinely playable — but never quite punches above its weight. The research/expedition theme gives it a personality the standard City passenger train lacks, with color blocking and detailing that reads more adventure than transit. Six minifigs fill the cars without feeling padded, and 1525 pieces give a Saturday afternoon build with enough going on to stay interesting. The price sits in reasonable territory for what you get, though it's not a deal that makes you call anyone. Display-wise it's handsome on a shelf — long, horizontal, finished-looking — but it doesn't stop guests in their tracks. Where it falls short is the ceiling: nothing here is surprising, and the build experience delivers competence over cleverness. A B- that most City fans will like and almost no one will love.
