Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit
42179-1 · Technic
Based on 11 reviews · thin
Technic doing planetary science is a cool premise, but the execution here is more classroom model than display centerpiece — the orrery mechanism works, but the finished product struggles to justify shelf space over a real globe.
Is the price fair?B+Fair for a licensed-adjacent science model, not a bargain, not a rip-off.
Will you love it?C-The gearing gimmick is clever once; after that, it mostly collects dust.
Holds its value?C+Forgettable mid-tier Technic tends to retire quietly and stay quiet.

The Full Take
The Earth and Moon in Orbit wants to be the science-nerd version of a Technic showpiece, and to its credit, the orrery-style gearing that animates the orbital motion is the set's one genuine trick. Spin the crank and the Moon traces its path around Earth — it's satisfying for about two minutes, and then the novelty largely runs out. The visual result is thin: two spheres on a frame isn't commanding shelf presence, and next to something like the NASA sets it looks more like a prototype than a finished model. At $74.99 the price is reasonable for what's in the box, but 'reasonable' and 'exciting' aren't the same thing. This is a set built for a specific person — someone who wants a mechanical demonstration of orbital mechanics — and for everyone else it's a shrug in a box.
